Is Fast Food Ok?

Fast food is convenience food that is usually highly processed and is deep fried or cabinet food and is easy to get on the go. It fulfills immediate hunger because it often doesn’t have any slow release energy.

It is ok to eat fast food every once in a while but not everyday.

This is because fast food often has very little nutritional value and has high levels of sugar, salt or
fat because it has been highly processed. Eating high levels of sugar, salt or fat all the time causes
lots of health problems later in life like heart disease, obesity, type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure.
Fast food can also cause malnutrition because it lacks vital nutrients and the high levels of salt
can dehydrate you.

Water Or Coffee?

Why is drinking water better for teenagers than drinking tea or coffee?

Everybody needs water to be hydrated and it is important for keeping our body temperature even. Teenagers need to be drinking a minimum of 2 litres of water every day, more if you are active
- to be healthy. Water is the healthiest liquid you can drink. It is free and readily available for most people, it doesn't contain any sugar, salt or fat. Water is an essential nutrient and is needed to transport oxygen and nutrients to cells, protects organs and regulates body temperature.

Coffee is widely drunk in New Zealand, often to help people wake up in the morning. This waking
up effect is because coffee contains large amounts of caffeine. According to the NZ Nutrition
Foundation there are 60 - 80mg in one cup (250ml) of instant coffee. Caffeine is a stimulant
drug which affects the central nervous system. Too much coffee causes increased heart rate,
alertness, can worsen anxiety and in some cases cause insomnia or nausea.

Tea contains caffeine as well but not as much as coffee. However it can still cause anxiety and
other side effects. Tea also has tannins which prevent iron absorption, this can cause an iron
deficiency and lead to osteoporosis, which is a bone disease caused by the lack of iron. There
are some health benefits of tea because it contains antioxidants which can protect your cells
and prevent damage. This can prevent heart disease, cancer and other diseases caused by
free radicals.

Water is by far the healthiest drink for everyone and even though tea is better for you than
drinking coffee, it too has some negative health effects. So if you want to be as healthy as
possible, start drinking at least 6-8 glasses of water each day.

What Influences Teenagers Eating Habits

The factors which can influence what teenagers eat can be divided into three groups. They are personal,
interpersonal and societal influences.

Personal influences are things you do that influence your own food choices such as waking up too late
to make your own breakfast.

Interpersonal is the people, places and things in your life that are close to you that influence food
choices. For example, your family/whanau and friends can all have an interpersonal influence on what
you eat.

Society influences what you eat because of things you see in your wider community like, advertising,
shops and online.

There are some really simple classification models that can help structure the quantities and types of
foods that you eat. These will provide nutritious, balanced meals and by following these guides the
negative influences on what you choose to eat should decrease.

‘Give A Little’ Project

In my Textiles class we had to make a ‘give a little’ project. My friend and I decided we were going to make our give a little items for the local Preschool. We made 10 little bean bag chickens for them. We made the chickens out of felt and then filled them with wheat to make bean bags. The children can use the chickens to balance with or learn to throw and catch, they were very pleased with the chickens when we showed them.
